FAQ & Pilot Guide
Everything you need to know about flying with Skjold Airways
Getting Started
Skjold Airways is a Nordic-themed virtual airline for flight simulation enthusiasts. We offer a realistic airline experience with route networks, pilot progression, and community events — all inspired by Scandinavia's aviation heritage.
We support Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS 2020/2024) and X-Plane. Our ACARS system works with both platforms to track your flights automatically.
Click "Apply Now" on our landing page or visit the registration page. Choose your home hub (Oslo or Copenhagen), set up your profile, and you're ready to fly. We recommend enabling two-factor authentication for account security.
No — Skjold Airways is completely free. We're a community-driven virtual airline run by passionate simmers.
A hub is your home base airport. We currently operate from Oslo Gardermoen (ENGM) and Copenhagen Kastrup (EKCH). Choose whichever feels right — you can transfer after 6 months if you change your mind.
Flying
Go to Find Flights, browse available routes, and place a bid on the one you want. You can also use SimBrief to generate a detailed flight plan. When ready, launch your sim and our ACARS will track your flight automatically.
A Pilot Report (PIREP) is a record of your completed flight. It includes departure/arrival airports, flight time, fuel used, and landing rate. PIREPs can be filed automatically via ACARS or manually through the pilot portal.
ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) is our flight tracking software called Huginn. It connects to your flight simulator, monitors your flight in real-time, and automatically files a PIREP when you land.
You can fly any active route in our network. Staff occasionally issue Free Flight codes that let you fly any route outside the schedule. Check your dashboard for available codes.
Don't worry! Every pilot has rough landings. PIREPs with high landing rates may be flagged for review, but they won't be rejected just for a hard landing. Practice makes perfect.
Absolutely! We encourage flying on online networks. Our ACARS works alongside VATSIM and IVAO without any conflicts.
Ranks & Progression
Ranks are based on your total flight hours. As you log more hours, you'll automatically be promoted to higher ranks. Each rank unlocks new privileges and recognition within the airline.
Awards are earned by reaching milestones — your first flight, logging 100 hours, achieving a butter landing, completing special event routes, and more. Check the Awards page to see what's available.
Yes, but hub transfers have a 6-month cooldown to maintain roster stability. An admin can generate a transfer code if you need to move sooner under special circumstances.
Each month, the pilot with the best combination of flights, hours, and landing quality is recognised as Pilot of the Month. It's calculated automatically from your PIREP data.
Technical
Download Huginn from the pilot portal, install it on your PC or Mac, and log in with your Skjold Airways credentials. It will automatically detect your simulator and begin tracking when you start a flight.
Go to your Profile page and find the Two-Factor Authentication section. We support TOTP apps like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Apple Passwords.
PIREPs may be rejected if the data appears inconsistent (e.g. impossibly short flight time for the distance). Check the rejection reason in your logbook. If you believe it was an error, reach out to staff via Messages.
Use the Messages feature in the pilot portal to reach staff directly, or join our Discord server for community support.
